Many private-equity firms continue to grapple with making progress on pledges to improve racial diversity across their portfolio companies and their own firms, more than a year after global protests in the wake of George Floyd’s murder inspired such pledges.

But the investors who back these firms are intensifying their scrutiny of manager progress on improving diversity and are asking more questions about how firms are addressing inequities.
