Anne Hathaway is continuing to prove that she’s one to watch in the style department.
Whether she’s demonstrating how elegant her red-carpet wardrobe is at this year’s Cannes Film Festival or sitting front row at a Prada catwalk show, Hathaway has been looking effortlessly put-together in recent months.
Now, she’s inspiring our autumnal outfits as the seasons change. She stepped out in New York wearing an oversized blazer by Christopher John Rogers, which could have come straight out of the Eighties, complete with bold print and statement shoulder pads. She styled it over a white Valentino mini-dress, worn with Isabel Marant knee-high boots, a Victoria Beckham clutch bag, and oversized sunglasses for that extra touch of glamour.
Although oversized suits look good when styled right, there is the risk of looking like you’re drowning in too much material. Take style cues from Hathaway here and remember the importance of proportions. Celebrity stylist Maeve Reilly, who dresses the likes of Megan Fox and Ciara, pairing your oversized item with something more fitted so that there’s definition to your outfit. Here, Hathaway has chosen to keep her dress hemline short and opted for sheer Wolford tights, to refrain from looking too covered up.
“Keep the shirt underneath tight or something else fitted within your outfit so that you can see your body in some way,” Reilly previously told us. “Personally, I like to do that with a baggy trouser, a crop top and then a baggy blazer. It’s all about dressing for your body type, so think about what the most flattering thing is or feature you love most and show that off.”

Gaelle Drevet, designer at Frankie Shop, a label known for its oversized tailoring, echoes the importance of proportions when perfecting the oversized look.
“It has to look too boxy in a way, because that is what will make you look effortless yet refined – think sophisticated but relaxed,” she notes. “It’s really all about proportions, the material and the construction of the blazer around the shoulders also have a lot to do with whether the garment hangs or falls on the body; if it’s big, but the material is right, it flows around you in a surprisingly flattering way.”
Hathaway is a clear fan of the oversized tailored look; she wore another sized-up ensemble earlier this week in the form of a denim Nili Lotan suit that she styled again with her Victoria Beckham clutch.
