For years, the diet of one of the world’s wealthiest men has been a topic of curiosity. Warren Buffett, who turned 95 on August 30, hasn’t seen his palate change much since childhood.
In a 2015 interview with Fortune, he described his food preferences as similar to those of a 6-year-old. “If I eat 2,700 calories a day, a quarter of that is Coca-Cola. I do it every day,” said the Oracle of Omaha.
But Coca-Cola isn’t his only daily indulgence. Fortune pointed to further evidence of Buffett’s dietary habits, which were featured in a 2017 HBO documentary, Becoming Warren Buffett, which revealed that he also visits McDonald’s every morning for breakfast.
And his day doesn’t end there when it comes to eating out. Dairy Queen is Buffett’s go-to lunch spot, where he orders a chili cheese dog and never leaves without an ice cream sundae.
Buffett is no fan of sushi
His preferences have long surprised many in the business world who’ve dined with the legendary investor over the years. Though sushi is a cherished cuisine for many, Buffett doesn’t touch the stuff—thanks to an incident dating back to 1989.
As detailed in The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder, the billionaire was introduced to sushi by then-Sony chairman Akio Morita during a dinner party. Buffett didn’t try a single bite and has never dared to give it another shot since.
Schroeder noted that Buffett was polite in declining the various dishes served, but not knowing exactly what he was being offered led him to send back every plate essentially untouched.
This doesn’t mean Buffett has avoided doing business in Japan. However, while visiting the country, he’s struggled to find food options that satisfy his taste buds.
During an interview with Becky Quick on CNBC’s Squawk Box while visiting Tokyo, he shared that he’d been drinking Coca-Cola and eating Hershey’s Kisses when asked about his diet on the trip.
Buffett told Quick that he’d happily lose a year of his life if it meant eating the foods he loves—because they bring him joy. And for him, that joy is a critical factor in what he believes has contributed to his longevity.
